In 1992 the island was World Herritage Listed for its internationaly significant natural features. The fourth largest Island off the mainland (Tasmania, Kangaroo Is., Melville Is), Fraser has evolving lake, dune, soil and forest systems, with beginnings dating back millions of years. Over this period, ocean currents and waves have swept sand north from the continental shelf of New South Wales and Queensland, to accumulate and cover the bedrock to form a large dune parallel to the coast leaving only some peaks, such as Indian Head uncovered.
